Depending on how your margarita is made, you could be consuming over 800 calories in one glass, with a lot of those cals coming from sugar. However, there is a much healthier, low sugar recipe that can keep you enjoying margaritas, without the guilt. Classic margaritas are made with tequila, triple sec and lime juice which will lower the calorie count quite a bit, but the triple sec still has about 11 grams of sugar per shot. The way to get around this is to use orange extract. Make sure you get a good quality, organic version to add to your cocktail bar. Another option is to use orange Angostura bitters.
Another key point in making a memorable (and healthier) margarita is to use freshly pressed lime juice. I have a lime press that makes this process so much easier. Limes are a great source of bitter compounds that are beneficial for health.
Here’s my go to recipe:
Ingredients
2 oz Tequila
Juice of 1 1/2 limes
1/4 ounce organic orange extract
couple of dashes of Angostura Aromatic Bitters
Himalayan pink salt
Lime slices (for garnish)
Fresh mint, (for garnish)
Ice
Directions
In a single serve cocktail shaker, fill half way with ice. Add tequila, freshly pressed lime juice, orange extract, Angostura Bitters and a pinch of pink Himalayan salt. Shake vigorously for about 20 seconds. Take the full lid off and pour entire contents into glass. Garnish with lime slice, fresh mint and a another small pinch of pink salt.
